i am runing ubuntu server (16.04.03) as virtual machine (VMware fusion). I don't use any sound card, every player is external one.

i am able to manage devices from LMS - that is working, but i don't understand how to config lox mini server - tried to copy example config, but I dont get any responce to MS.

As often written I don't support any VM Machines.
I don't use it so I can't help.

I think the scripts can't read the settings. The questions is is every thing willing well or is it only the failure in the webui?

for shure, the Status can not be read from every UPnP Device, but that is a problem from the Device not from MS4L
The idea from MS4L wasnt to build a Music-Network with only external devices. External devices are only additional to the internal.

Just a note.. I have just tried installing this and had the same error..

My problem was in /opt/music_server/soundcard_cfg/multicard/multi.cfg

it put the channels as 8th...
